Must Watch Documentary: Virgunga

Virgunga-National-Park

It terrifies me how much of a bubble I live in. I praise the people who put their lives in danger to share cases like that of Virunga National Park with the outside world.

Virunga is a national park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to 1/4 of the endangered mountain gorillas. With the discovery of oil in the park, everyone wants a piece of the profit even if that means going to war. The documentary Virunga follows the brave people risking their lives to protect the national park from exploitation. It is devastating to see the effects foreign corporations have on the surrounding communities and future of the park.

I highly recommend watching Virunga. It is an extremely powerful reminder of how our habits as consumers effect communities thousands of miles away. Virunga is available on Netflix and can be steamed for free via Virunga Movie’s website. For more information on Virunga National Park visit http://virunga.org/the-park/.

Virunga is a nominee for best documentary feature at tonight’s Academy Awards!
